Twitter blocks pro-life group from buying ads due to messages criticizing Planned Parenthood
A leading pro-life group has been prohibited from buying advertisements on social media giant Twitter due to "inflammatory" and "offensive" messages criticizing Planned Parenthood.
Twitter has reportedly blocked the pro-life group Live Action from advertising on the platform until all messages that have been deemed offensive are deleted. The group has claimed that most of the tweets that have been considered offensive are messages that are critical of Planned Parenthood.
"I think it's clear that Twitter is discriminating against the pro-life voice," Live Action President Lila Rose told Fox News' Tucker Carlson.
"Planned Parenthood is allowed to promote their pro-abortion and misleading messages, while Live Action is barred from promoting any content exposing abortion and Planned Parenthood," she added.
The social media giant has reportedly flagged the pro-life group's tweets with ultrasound pictures and fact-checks of Planned Parenthood as violating its hate content and sensitive topic policy.
According to Life Site News, Twitter has asked Live Action to delete tweets containing ultrasound images of preborn children, as well as its tweets calling for the end of taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood.
A representative from Twitter reportedly told the pro-life organization that it would have to delete all of its tweets and overhaul its website in order to advertise on the platform.
One particular advertisement that Twitter refused to allow on the platform was a picture of a baby in the womb with the caption, "I Am Not a Potential Human" at the top and "I Am a Human With Potential" at the bottom.
A spokesperson for Twitter claimed that ideology is not taken into account in the enforcement of the company's advertisement policy.
"Twitter has clear, transparent rules that every advertiser is required to follow, and the political viewpoints of an organization do not impact how these rules are applied," a statement from Twitter read.
Rose asserted that Twitter's actions are indicative of an "epidemic" of the suppression of free speech that is happening in universities across the U.S.
Twitter has prevented other pro-life groups from buying ads on its platform in the past. The Susan B. Anthony List, a political action committee that works to get pro-life women elected to Congress, has been prevented from posting a tweet that stated: "Abortion is profoundly anti-woman. Three quarters of its victims are women and children: Half the babies and all the mothers."
The social media company reportedly stated that the message violated its policy prohibiting "the promotion of health and pharmaceutical products and services."
