'X-Men 7' release date, news: next 'X-Men' film begins production on May 2017
Looks like 20th Century Fox isn't going to take some time to slow down and take a little breather. "X-Men: Apocalypse" may have come out this year, but a new report has revealed that the studio is already planning their next move.
According to Le Journal De Montreal (via CBM), a new "X-Men" film will begin production in May next year. "They will start shooting in May and they will occupy Studios 2 and 3 of MELS for several months," MELS Studios president Michel Trudel confirmed.
The report mentions that Fox has already established production offices in MELS Studios in Montreal, and set construction works will commence in January. The upcoming film will be the third "X-Men" movie shot in the studio after "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "X-Men: Apocalypse."
"We had two and a half months of negotiations with the people at Fox. I went to Los Angeles last October to try to convince them. We are very pleased that they have agreed to return to Montreal. They enjoyed their two previous shooting experience with us and they were very satisfied with our facilities and talent of the Quebec film industry," Trudel said.
So, is the film going to be a follow-up to "X-Men: Apocalypse"? Or is it going to a spin-off film? Well, director Josh Boone may have given fans a little hint when he retweeted Den of Geek's report.
If the film is going to be "New Mutants," it will be a welcome change. Fans have been watching the same characters in six "X-Men" movies — well, the same characters with different actors portraying them.
Collider's Haleigh Foutch also pointed out that this makes sense since the planned "Gambit" movie won't be moving forward anytime soon, and FOX is still trying to bring back Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult for the main "X-Men" films.
FOX has yet to announce a release date for "New Mutants," but the studio does have an "untitled Marvel/Fox Film" scheduled for Nov. 2, 2018, and another on Feb. 14, 2019.
