'War for the Planet of the Apes' release date, news: Steve Zahn shares some details about Bad Ape

When Steve Zahn was cast in "War for the Planet of the Apes" last year, the filmmakers didn't really reveal much about his character, other than it was going to an ape. However, that changed last week when 20^{th Century Fox released the first official trailer and began promoting the film.}

The studio also invited some journalist to the Fox Showcase in New York for a sneak peek of "War for the Planet of the Apes," and one of the footages shown was a scene involving Zahn's character Bad Ape being chased. Interestingly, the character can talk just like Caesar (Andy Serkis).

In an interview with Comic Book, Steve Zahn shared some details about his character Bad Ape.

"He's an outsider and he's kind of like a hill rat. He's been living on his own so he's really excited to be part of a group. He's integral to the story in that he has knowledge of where they're going. They're on a journey and he's the scout. His information is his... He doesn't have any super powers. He knows what paths to go through," he explained.

In case anyone is wondering why the character is called Bad Ape, there's actually a good explanation. The character actually spent years of captivity in a zoo and he was often called "Bad Ape" there.

Bad Ape hasn't been around other apes for years now and he is very anxious. The character is going to be important to the storyline because he knows the location of an abandoned military camp. And this piece of information pushed Caesar to go on a journey.

Bad Ape is going to be serious all the time, though, and the character is going to bring some sense of humor that has been absent in the two previous "Planet of the Apes" films. "It's not like all the sudden there's comedy. Just to see a different speed and a guy who's like this and excited just comes off a little bit more humorous," Zahn said.

"War for the Planet of the Apes" is scheduled to premiere on July 14, 2017.
