'Vikings' season 4 finale recap, season 5 spoilers: Ragnar's sons to split into two camps?

The final episode of the fourth season of History's TV series "Vikings" felt like the end of a regime while also ushering a new era for the Norsemen.

With the death of Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) several episodes earlier, his sons continue their quest for revenge in "Vikings" season 4 episode 20. In Wessex, they came looking for King Ecbert (Linus Roache) and his people. Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), Ivar (Alex Hough), and the rest of the crew easily tracked down Ecbert and camped out of his deserted castle as he waits for his doomed fate.

Ecbert's plan to trade the Vikings' land and choose his own manner of death succeeds. However, his blood was not the only one shed during the episode. Helga (Maude Hirst) also died, having been brutally stabbed by the throat by her "adopted daughter." And with Ragnar's death avenged, his sons soon find themselves pointing their weapons at each other. Ivar throws an axe at his brother Sigurd (David Lindstrom) and kills him.

After a dramatic ending for the show's fourth season, many are now wondering where the show goes from here.

According to a report from the International Business Times AU, the fifth season of "Vikings" will open with the burial of Sigurd, and the mystery as to why Ivar killed his own brother will also be brought to light.

"I think if memory serves Season 5 begins with the burial of Sigurd," showrunner Michael Hirst told Variety. "And Ivar is weeping and saying he never meant to do it. But his murder of Sigurd splits the brothers — they split up into different camps," he added.

Rollo (Clive Standen) and Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) will also be returning in season 5. Rollo was last seen completing his Mediterranean mission with Bjorn. Floki, on the other hand, left his brothers to sacrifice the rest of his life to the gods.

"Floki was similarly destroyed by the death of the three people closest to him: his daughter, Ragnar and Helga. Floki is going to commit himself to the gods. His previous life is over — he might as well be dead. The new season will find him submitting to the will of the gods," Hirst told Variety.

"Vikings" season 5 has no confirmed air date as of now.
