'True Detective' season 3 renewal news and updates: HBO exec reaffirms next installment
In a recent interview, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys reiterates that the anthology crime drama series "True Detective" season 3 is a go but there's "nothing to report" yet about its development.
Entertainment Weekly asked Bloys for any update on the show to which the HBO exec answered, "They're thinking about ideas, and when they find something, that's when I'll hear from them. ... They're thinking about what the best-next version is."
This means that the production team is taking their time to craft the next season of "True Detective," which is a good sign considering what the show went through in terms of viewers and critics reception.
"True Detective" season 1 was a major hit and its second season was no doubt happening. However, in the second installment of the show fans and critics were disappointed at the wide change in quality of the plot writing that was put on to the series. With the unlikely response that season 2 got, the renewal of the show became vague.
However, as early as July Bloys already said that "True Detective" will not be canceled. He told the press, "It is not dead, but there's no take on a third season yet."
Since critics and viewers point to a poorly written season 2, and writer and creator Nic Pizzolatto was an easy target to blame. But another HBO exec, Michael Lombardo, was quick to defend the writer and told fans that the blame is on him.
In an interview with The Frame, Lombardo said, "Our biggest failures ... when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked — we've failed. And I think in this particular case, the first season of True Detective was something that Nic Pizzolatto had been thinking about, gestating, for a long period of time." He continued by saying that Pizzolatto is a soulful writer.
Meanwhile, Parent Herald reports that HBO is yet to get pitches from Pizzolatto. However, they also mentioned that the network might not wait for the original creator as they recruit a new writer to pen season 3 while Pizzolatto remains as an executive producer.
Since "True Detective" is in its early stages, there is no telling when it is going to be released.
