'True Detective' season 3 release date rumors: Series is still unofficial but development continues in HBO

HBO continues to support development for the supposed third season of "True Detective." But the cable channel remains tight-lipped about its specifics reiterating that they will not be rushing its production.

The network appears to be more careful with the police anthology, taking into consideration whatever they have learned during the show's second installment and making them as their basis for working on season 3. Following its blockbuster debut outing that put seasoned stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as leads Detective Rustin "Rust" Cohle and Detective Martin "Marty" Hart, respectively, the series suffered from plot weakness in its subsequent year.

"I don't have anything on paper yet but I know there are some ideas going back and forth. I don't want to rush it. I don't want to do anything just to get it on the air," HBO's original programming president Casey Bloys said during this month's Television Critics Association winter press tour.

It is no secret that due to the overwhelming response that the first iteration of "True Detective" has received way back in 2014 both in terms of viewership ratings and accolades, HBO had rushed its second season to capitalize on the buzz. Unfortunately, while the Colin Farrell–Rachel McAdams story was decent enough, many thought that it did not live up to its predecessor's performance in terms of viewership and narrative.

McConaughey remained to be involved in the property even after his stint in season 1 as one of the executive producers of the anthology series. And more recently, he has time and time again expressed his desire to step back in the boots of Rust should folks at HBO decide to bring him back for even more stories.

As of now, series creator Nic Pizzolatto is still set to oversee and write future installments if the franchise ever decides to come back on air. What is unknown yet are the teams that he would need to build to work on a possible season 3. Furthermore, a lot of people are also anticipating the ensemble cast that "True Detective" may assemble for its tipped comeback.
