Fans of the HBO series "True Detective" are still hoping that the third season of the American anthology crime drama will eventually make its way on air.

After two seasons, there were speculations that the show may be pulled off air after a drop in the ratings, while others claimed that the channel was veering away from dramas and leaning towards comedic shows.

Cinema Blend previously reported that there were still people backing the return of the drama, with then-HBO president Michael Lombardo revealing that he was very open to a third season at the time if the show's creator was willing as well.

Lombardo said: "If [Nic Pizzolatto] wanted to do another season, I told him our door is open. I'd love to do another season with him...I think he's an enormously talented writer, and I have already called him and said, 'Nic, if you want to do a Season 3, let's start talking.'"

However, Lombardo already resigned from his post and was eventually replaced by Casey Bloys. This sparked even more speculation that "True Detective" may be done for.

But recently, Ecumenical News revealed that a top Hollywood star was open to returning if the series would resume.

Matthew McConaughey played Rust Cohle in the show and admitted that he is open to reprising his role if given a chance.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, McConaughey admitted this by saying: "I miss Rust Cohle, man... I miss watching him on Sunday nights."

He went on to praise how his character was made and how it made him enjoy his work as Cohle.

McConaughey said: "That thing — when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in. I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island."

With an A-list actor speaking up, expect more to come from the rumor mill regarding "True Detective" season 3 in the coming days.
