'Tron 3' Release Date News: Kosinski to Return as Director; Filming to Start in the Fall

After a lot of speculation as to whether a sequel to "Tron: Legacy" would go ahead, news emerged last week that director Joseph Kosinski would be returning to helm the much awaited "Tron 3." With news that a director has been named for the film, Disney has shown its commitment to make the movie even without an official announcement.

News about the start of the production on "Tron 3" came from The Hollywood Reporter which stated that the movie could begin filming in the fall of this year. A blog also reported that filming could kick off on Oct. 5 this year in Vancouver.

A lot of rumors have surrounding the making of "Tron 3" after its predecessor was shown in 2010. The appointment of Kosinski to direct the movie appears to indicate that the studio has faith in his vision even though "Tron: Legacy" did not make a lot of money at the box office. With a budget of $170 million and Garrett Hedlund playing the lead role of Sam Flynn, the film did manage to bring in $400 million at the box office. This, according to Entertainment Weekly, was a disappointment to the studio which was hoping for a much bigger hit.

"Tron: Legacy" ended with Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Sam escaping the virtual reality world after which she was able to experience living in the real world. It is expected that the upcoming film will continue with this plot.

In addition to this, Kosinski spoke about "Tron 3" several years ago and mentioned that he had "a big idea in the back of his head for the movie, and wanted to make sure that the script delivers on that promise on an epic scale."

Since that time, however, Disney has run through a number of writers trying to create a script for the movie which does not bode well for the film.
