'Tomb Raider' Reboot News: New Film to See Younger Lara Craft Going on Her First Adventure
Writer Evan Daugherty and Warner Bros. have climbed on board the "Tomb Raider" reboot of MGM, which will have a younger Lara Croft going on her first adventure, according to an exclusive by Deadline.
Daugherty – the writer behind recent films such as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Divergent," "Snow White and the Huntsman," and "G.I. Joe 3," – has been tasked to pen the script for the reboot film, based on the ever popular video game featuring the globe-trotting and swashbuckling archaeologist Lara Croft.
Warner Bros. has inked a deal with MGM and producer Graham King – whose portfolio includes "Argo" and "World War Z" – to co-finance and co-produce the film. Denis O'Sullivan will oversee for GK Films, Cassidy Lange for MGM and Jon Berg for Warner Bros.
There has been "strong progress to production language in the rights deal with Square Enix, the video game company behind the title," wrote Deadline.
Actress and now-director Angelina Jolie first filled in the role of Lara Croft in the previous franchise released in 2011. The first movie and its sequel grossed $432 million worldwide.
The 2013 reboot of the game features actress Camilla Luddington, known for her roles in "Grey's Anatomy," "Californication," or "True Blood," who lent her voice as Lara Croft and provided motion capture performance.
"She is such an iconic character that I assume everyone is familiar with the character," Luddington told gameinformer.com. "Also, for me when the first game came out, I was probably like 12 or 13 or something like that and my older brother actually had the game. I remember that he rarely let me play, but I would sneak in sometimes. I was familiar with the game really through him because he was a gamer."
