'The Walking Dead: Season 3' release date news: 'A New Frontier' to have two-part premiere

"A New Frontier," the third season in Telltale Games' "The Walking Dead" point-and-click adventure video game series will be arriving on Tuesday, Dec. 20. At the recently concluded The Game Awards (TGA), the game developer announced that the game will have a special two-part premiere, which means players will be receiving two episodes right off the bat.

According to Polygon, Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner announced during the awards ceremony that the content intended for the premiere episode was too big to fit in just one chapter. Thus, they decided to roll out the first two installments of the five-episode season.

At TGA 2016, Telltale also unveiled "The Ties That Bind" trailer that introduced a new character — Javier. The first-look footage introduces the backstory of Javier and how the zombie apocalypse has affected him and his family. Years later, he will cross paths with the previous seasons' protagonist, Clementine. Both will be playable in the upcoming season.

"As Javier, a young man determined to protect his family, you meet a young girl who has experienced her own unimaginable loss. Her name is Clementine, and your fates are bound together in a story where every choice you make could be your last," according to the synopsis from Telltale.

With the presence of Clementine, longtime players of the series will have a sense of continuity following the events of the first two seasons. Meanwhile, those who are new to the series will be able to start the adventure from scratch with the introduction of Javier. With multiple options available to all players, they will have a tailored gameplay experience.

Aside from the digital release of "The Walking Dead: Season 3," a special "Season Pass Disc" will also be released for PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One on Feb. 14, 2017. For PS4 players who pre-order the game, they will receive a complimentary copy of "The Walking Dead: Season 2" and "The Walking Dead: Michonne." Meanwhile, Steam users gain a 10 percent discount.

"The Walking Dead: Season 3" will be playable on PS4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.
