'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 update, rumors: Will Elena Gilbert wake up in time for series finale?

It was already revealed that the currently airing eighth season of "The Vampire Diaries" will be the last for the series. At this point, the biggest question among the long-time fans of the show is whether its former lead actress, Nina Dobrev, will ever return especially that the series is coming to a close. Nevertheless, the series' executive producers are positive that Dobrev and her character, Elena Gilbert, will definitely come back.

Just recently, "The Vampire Diaries" showrunner Julie Plec had an interview with Entertainment Tonight, wherein Plec mentioned the growing possibility of Dobrev appearing on the show just in time for the finale. 

"She and I have spoken and I know that she 100 percent wants to be there," Plec revealed. "I, of course, 100% want her to be there, and so it just comes down to stupid things like scheduling. Honestly, let's put it this way: I would be devastated if it weren't to work out, so I have a feeling the cards will be in all our favor."

The anticipation of the return of her character, Elena, will intensify as the executive producer hints of more scenes in the coming episodes that involve the former female protagonist of the show. However, these are going to be flashbacks as "Damon's memories of her play a big part of the season."

Dobrev's return on the show will be quite complicated, especially that the actress is expected to cross paths with her former boyfriend, Ian Somerhalder, who is playing Elena's love interest, Damon Salvatore.There are reports stating that Somerhalder does not think Elena's return in the show to re-ignite their characters' old flame is necessary, as both his character and Stefan (Paul Wesley) do not deserve to be that "lucky."

As the showrunners of "The Vampire Diaries" themselves are looking forward to the return of Elena Gilbert for the series finale, it is getting more likely that the character is going to appear very soon. To recall, Dobrev's character was put under a slumber curse that the only way for her to wake up is for her bestfriend, Bonnie Bennet (Kat Graham), to die. For sure, a lot of interesting twists will happen leading to Elena's return.
