'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 news, updates: Tyler Lockwood returning for final season?
It looks like old familiar faces will be finding their way back to Mystic Falls in time to see "The Vampire Diaries" bid goodbye to its loyal viewers when it airs its final season this October.
First, there were talks that Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert on the series, will be back on the series that made her a household name, albeit on a limited basis. Now, it's been confirmed that Michael Trevino, who played football-jock-cum-hybrid-werewolf Tyler Lockwood, will be heading back to Mystic Falls for the eighth and final season of the show.
Entertainment Weekly (EW) got first dibs on the news that Tyler Lockwood will be heading home to Mystic Falls and will appear for a face-to-face confrontation with Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) in episode 3 of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8.
It will be recalled that Tyler left Mystic Falls in the season 6 finale to embrace his supernatural side. He came back briefly in season 7 and was tasked to keep Elena's comatose body safe. He was last seen being beaten unconscious by Damon who was a bit out of his mind.
It's obvious that Tyler came out of that beating alive, and apparently, he will come back to talk some sense into Damon who will continue his downward spiral after spending time in the Armory vault. According to EW, Tyler will try to remind Damon what and who is important. However, considering the history between these two characters, there's a chance things will not go smoothly between them.
Meanwhile, Michael Malarkey, who plays Enzo, teased what will become of his character and Damon after being possessed by the unknown evil lurking in the Armory vault.
"We will find out why and what they're driven by and it's something to do with this new supreme evil that has been lurking in the vault, that has escaped the vault," Marlarkey told Showbiz Junkies in August. "Enzo, however, is kind of grappling with this a bit more, he's fighting it a bit more than Damon and how we start the season is seeing the whole relationship with Damon and Enzo and this creature, you can call it."
As for Nina Dobrev's comeback, The CW president Mark Pedowitz told E! News that negotiations are on-going, although nothing has been finalized with the actress as of yet.
"There are discussions going on with Nina, we'd love to have her back. ... These are discussions that go on, hopefully she'll be back," Pedowitz said, adding, "But should it not work out, Julie [Plec, showrunner] has planned out a great series finale for fans."
"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 returns Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
