'The Strain' season 3 episode 3 spoilers: Quinlan's origins revealed; is the Master really dead?

True to its name, the third episode of "The Strain" season 3 titled, "First Born" revealed the origins of two boys presumably "destined for greatness."

The episode opened in the delivery room, where Kelly (Natalie Brown) gave birth to a caul baby — one born wrapped inside the amniotic sac — who grew up to be Zach (Max Charles). The boy had previously been given a drop of the Master's venom to alleviate an asthma attack triggered by witnessing his mother feed on a boy much like himself.

Kelly assured her son that the venom did not and would not turn him. The Master, it turned out, could use his venom to heal without the unsightly side effects. But Kelly told her son that the Master would someday require his help in creating a world free of strife.

"He will show you when you are ready," Kelly told her boy, seemingly foreshadowing some interesting twists in Zach's story arc.

On the other hand, while Quinlan's (Rupert Penry-Jones) past was revealed in a couple of flashbacks, his biological origin was discovered by the audience in a conversation with Eph (Corey Stoll) at the present. He had been conceived by two humans but because the Master stung his mother at some point during her pregnancy, it led to him being born as a hybrid prophesied to be the Master's "undoing." He refused to elaborate on why killing the Master could also mean his own death.

While their plan of trading the Occido Lumen for Zach failed, Quinlan succeeded in defeating the Master by decapitating his head with some help from Fet (Kevin Durand) and Setrakian (David Bradley). But a blood worm slithering out of his headless body and rushing to the nearest sewer proved that their fight against the Master was far from over. It was also not clear whether Quinlan has died or not.

Meanwhile, the question of what Gus (Miguel Gomez) has been up to all this time was finally answered when he was shown back at his apartment, purposefully bleeding himself out to feed his mother Guadalupe (Adriana Barraza). Guadalupe has been a strigoi since the first season.

In an interview with TV Insider, Gomez shared that while there was a part of Gus who knew that his mom was gone, keeping her strigoi form alive was the very thing sustaining him and giving him the motivation to move on with his life. Gus may also be harboring hope that a cure could be out there somewhere.

The next episode of "The Strain" season 3 titled, "Gone But Not Forgotten," may see the strigoi infection evolve into a new and more menacing form. While Fet is all about celebrating their victory, Eph and Setrakian believe that new challenges are up ahead. This is according to the episode synopsis posted on Spoiler TV.

"The Strain" airs on Sundays, 10 p.m. on FX.
