'The Lego Movie 2 Sequel' Release Date, News: Ron Schrab to Direct Upcoming Film
"Comedy genius" Ron Schrab is set to direct the upcoming "The Lego Movie Sequel," according to Variety.
Tapped by Warner Bros., the film set for release in 2018 will be Schrab's feature directional debut.
The sequel is based on a story by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Jared Stern, and Michelle Morgan. Miller, who wrote and directed "The Lego Movie," will also produce along with Lord, Dan Lin, and Roy Lee.
"We are so excited to collaborate with Rob," Lord and Miller was quoted by Variety as saying. "He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, brings a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, 'Of course!'"
Schrab has also directed episodes of "The Mindy Project" and "Parks and Recreation." He was a writer, director, and executive producer for "The Sarah Silverman Program."
Together with long-time friend "Community" creator Dan Harmon, Schrab wrote the pilot of "Heat Vision and Jack" and the screenplay for the film "Monster House."
The move to have Schrab direct "The Lego Movie Sequel" has been lauded by Den of Geek!, who said that he is perfect for the job:
"The zany, nerdy vibe of The Lego Movie matches up perfectly with Schrab's sensibilities. He's all about striking, funny visuals (the first major thing he did was a comic series, 'Scud: The Disposable Assassin') and even the live-action stuff he does often has an animated feel to it. Just check out the cough syrup tripping sequence from the 'The Sarah Silverman Program' pilot (featuring a talking dinosaur) to see the sort of nonsense this gentleman can make happen."
The studio has yet to set a specific date for its release, but Variety said the film will probably hit theaters in 2018.
