'The Last Man on Earth' season 3 episode 10 spoilers: Trailer shows not-so-promising fate for Melissa, Gail in 2017

"The Last Man on Earth" is headed for darker territories when it returns next year in spring. And even though Tandy (Will Forte) and Carol (Kristen Schaal) had a taste of an early Christmas miracle when their catfish Gail came back to life, will the real Gail (Mary Steenburgen), who is still in the elevator, be granted the same favorable fate?

"That part of what I love about the show, and I think fans love about it too, is that you really don't know what's going to happen," Steenburgen said in an exclusive phone interview with Entertainment Weekly. When asked about why her character, Gail, put the final bullet into her gun and did what she did in the final scene of the midseason finale, Steenburgen replied, "It's the final ability to make a choice."

"The Last Man on Earth" season 3 episode 10 ended on a rather shocking note when Gail, after being stuck in the elevator for a couple of days seemed to have decided to put her fate in her own hands. It was never shown what Gail actually did with the gun, but the sound of the gunshot ringing left very little for the viewers' imagination. Will Gail be exiting the show in the second half of season 3, the same way that Phil (Boris Kodjoe) did in the previous season?

Steenburgen neither denied nor confirmed Gail's supposed death, and for good reasons.

"I want people to experience this show without me blowing anything for them..." Steenburgen stated.

Things are also not looking very promising for Melissa (January Jones) and Todd (Mel Rodriguez). The midseason finale saw Todd locking the increasingly unstable Melissa up in a room with double mirrors for her own safety. However, Melissa seems to have missed the good intention behind the drastic decision, as made apparent by the preview for the next episode.

"I am never going to forgive you, Todd," Melissa says through the double mirrors to the utter horror of her friends watching her on the other side. Has Melissa completely gone off the deep end, or will there still be hope of turning things around for her? What drastic measures will they be forced to make when Melissa proves to be a bigger threat than they would admit?

"The Last Man on Earth" season 3 returns to FOX next year in spring on a yet undisclosed date.
