'The Incredibles 2' update: Brad Bird reveals plans for sequel, hints big changes

The development for "The Incredibles 2" is well underway, and director-writer Brad Bird recently teased their plans for the long-awaited sequel.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly about the film, Bird said, "It's very actively moving, and we're excited about it... [We're] trying to take it in some new directions."

Bird said that although "The Incredibles 2" will be headed to a different route, fans who watched and loved the first film back in 2014 will still feel at home in the sequel even after a decade and a half.

"Hopefully it's the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction. I mean, that's the trick with a sequel. It's repeating yourself, without repeating yourself," he explained.

Bird refused to give specific details on the plot and what changes to expect in the characters in "The Incredibles 2" or if there will be time jump.

However, back in October, Bird teased to IGN that the sequel will be much less about the superpowers of the beloved Parr family and will focus more on them as normal human beings.

"Powers themselves are not that interesting. It's the people that are interesting and how they react to having those powers," the director explained.

As to how that will pan out in "The Incredibles 2," it appears that fans will have to wait a few more years. The film won't be released in cinemas until 2019 – that's 15 years since the first one.

With regards to the plot, previous rumors said that the young Parr sibling Jack-Jack will become villain for not being able to control his powers.

There are also rumors that "The Incredibles 2" will feature more of fan-favorite Edna Mode, who is voiced by Bird himself. She was the person responsible for creating the costumes for the family.

Edna has only one rule – no capes. It is unclear why, but it is hoped that the sequel will give an answer to that or at least a backstory for the character.
