"The Blacklist" season 4 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 22, and according to reports, it will open with an expose on Liz's backstory.

Fans will recall that the season 3 finale of the series left more questions than answers after several new and explosive revelations were bared. Liz Keen (Megan Boone) was shown alive after it was revealed that she merely faked her death with the help of Mr. Kaplan (Susan Blommaert) in order to escape Red Reddington (James Spader).

However, Liz's planned escape was futile; instead of reuniting with her husband Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) and daughter in Cuba, she was abducted by no less than Red's nemesis, Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen), who later reveals himself as Liz's biological father. Still, the question looms: Is he Liz's father?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show's executive producer Jon Bokenkamp said Kirk should be taken "at his word," thereby implying that Kirk might be telling the truth. He goes on to say that Liz will find some information about Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek), who is purportedly her mother.

Bokenkamp further says that Red shouldn't be blamed for the unfortunate consequences that seemed to befall Liz.

In a separate interview with EW, Boone said that aside from searching for her mother, Liz will find out whether Kirk is telling the truth about his identity or not. According to Boone, Liz will be wary of Kirk's intention and hints that her questions about her identity and personality will be revealed as season 4 progresses.

"What comes to light is that it's not really Reddington bringing all of this upon her, it's her own history and where she comes from. Something you start to realize through season 4 is she was strapped with this from birth," she said. "It's very complicated and it's something that actually gets revealed—it's a big reveal in episode 3 of season 4. Like a lot of the people that crop up in our show, his agenda is not necessarily altruistic. He doesn't have the best of intentions."

"The Blacklist" season 4 returns Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
