'Teen Wolf' Season 5 Air Date, Cast News: Fewer Derek Hale Scenes this June as Tyler Hoechlin Quits as Series Regular
Sorry, "Teen Wolf" fans, but you won't be seeing a lot of Derek Hale when the supernatural series returns for its fifth season this coming June on MTV.
Jeff Davis, producer of "Teen Wolf," revealed that Tyler Hoechlin will no longer be a series regular on the show.
During the Teen Wolf PaleyFest panel on Wednesday evening, Davis said Hoechlin told him he would like to try new things after the actor worked on an independent film.
"Tyler Hoechlin decided he wanted more time to pursue movies. We talked and creatively agreed that maybe this was a good season to refocus on the teens of Teen Wolf," Davis said, according to Hollywood Life.
But Davis immediately clarified that Hoechlin won't be a complete goner. "While he won't be a series regular anymore, I can say that you probably will not have seen the last of Derek Hale," he teased.
With the announcement, Hoechlin became the five cast member to have voluntarily exited the supernatural series, beginning with Colton Haynes.
Haynes unexpectedly vacated the role of Jackson Whittemore between Seasons 2 and 3.
Executive producer Jeff Davis spoke candidly about most of the show's departures, stressing that when actors come to him with a desire to leave, he works to accommodate their requests.
"If we'd known Colton was going to leave after Season 2, I'm not so sure [Jackson] would have survived," Davis said, according to TV Line.
Produced for MTV since 2011, "Teen Wolf" is an American television series that is loosely based on the 1985 film of the same name, starring Tyler Posey as a teenager named Scott.
Scott has been bitten by a werewolf and must cope with how it affects his life and the lives of those closest to him.
