'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers, updates: Sam and Dean to learn Mary's big secret? Rick Springfield cast in an unexpected role
When "Supernatural" returns for its 12th season, brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) will be going through a major adjustment period as they learn to live with their mother — Mary (Samantha Smith) — around.
Those who have been watching "Supernatural" since day one know that the Winchester brothers grew up without a mother. Sam was a baby and Dean was just a child when Mary was killed. However, during the season 11 finale, the Darkness (Emily Swallow) brought Mary back to life as a parting gift to Dean.
The cast of the show and showrunner Andrew Dabb recently talked to TV Line, and according to them, what Sam and Dean know about their mom might not be accurate. Dabb said that the brothers grew up believing that Mary's marriage to John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), their father, put a stop to her hunter activities.
Mary is the real hunter in the family, but her death led to John pursuing the same life for him and their sons. In one of Dean's time travel episodes in season 5, a younger Mary told Dean that she didn't want her family to follow the same path she did. However, fans will discover the truth in the upcoming season.
"But we're going to find out maybe that's not the whole story," Dabb told the publication, referring to Mary's hunting life.
The cast and showrunner even teased that a big secret of Mary's could be revealed in the upcoming season. That should give fans one thing to look forward to when "Supernatural" season 12 returns to the small screens this October.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Rick Springfield has been tapped to join the cast of the series in the upcoming installment. "Supernatural's" current antagonist, Lucifer, will apparently be looking for a new body to inhabit, and in some ironic twist of fate, he will choose to inhabit the body of Springfield's character.
Fans are in for a great installment as the 12th season of "Supernatural" promises to be similar to the first two seasons. According to Variety, the forthcoming installment will focus on the Winchester family and their business of hunting supernatural beings including ghosts, witches, vampires, demons, and even the Devil himself.
"Supernatural" season 12 will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW. In the meantime, check out some highlights from the show's panel in last month's San Diego Comic-Con here.
