'Supernatural' season 12 episode 9 spoilers: Prison, chaos, and a demon baby await the Winchesters in 2017

Is the second half of "Supernatural" season 12 heading to "The Omen" territory?

Where the previous episode left off, things weren't looking so promising for the Winchesters and their cavalry. Although they managed to extract Lucifer from President Rooney's (David Chisum) body, Kelly (Courtney Ford), the president's beau, was still pregnant with Lucifer's child.

A nephilim is powerful enough as it is, but with the Prince of Darkness as its father, the powers the child can wield may well be unimaginable. And with the Winchesters, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), imprisoned in an undisclosed, high security prison that is not even supposed to exist, how does humanity hope to fight this impending threat?

Lucifer's exit also seemed rather questionable that some fans have even speculated he had once again escaped and taken on a new vessel in record time — Rick Sanchez (Stephen Lobo), the secret service agent who swooped in to arrest the Winchesters for the attempted assassination of the president. Has Lucifer really escaped Rowena's (Ruth Connell) magic meant to put him back into his cage? Or was the Prince of Darkness' exit through the air vent meant he had really gone back to Hell?

Although sending Lucifer away was the big highlight of the episode, everything else that happened in the aftermath lends itself to much deliberation. Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard) and Rowena disappeared rather quickly after all was said and done. The Winchesters, who usually had the mind to sneak out before the authorities arrived at the scene, stuck around and got arrested. Perhaps most importantly, Kelly gave Castiel (Misha Collins) the slip and told him over the phone that she wanted to keep the baby.

In TV Fanatic's round table discussion about the midseason finale, it was speculated that this could all be part of a much bigger scheme. What that is will be made known when the series returns next year.

There is also the matter of Lucifer's child possibly growing into the household of a man in power, much like Damien did in the 1976 horror movie, "The Omen." Will Lucifer's spawn be born into the world, and if and when it does, how much threat would it pose to the Winchesters and the rest of humanity? Will Lucifer's legacy and quest for power carry over to his child?

"Supernatural" season 12 episode 9 titled "First Blood" will air on Thursday, Jan. 26, at a new and earlier timeslot of 8 p.m. EST on The CW. The show's old 9 p.m. slot will be taken over by The CW's new series, "Riverdale," which will premiere on the same date.
