'Super Mario Run' release date, news: surprise Nintendo game for Apple gets release schedule next month
Nintendo game "Super Mario Run" finally gets its date of release and price tag for the full game couple of months after its announcement.
Through the official Apple App Store Twitter page, it was revealed that "Super Mario Run" will be released on Dec. 15. The social media post says, "#SuperMarioRun lands Dec. 15. Can you hold in your wahoos 'til then? Only on the App Store, for iPhone & iPad."
One of the treats in the Sept. 7 Apple is not just the unveiling of iPhone 7, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto hits Apple's stage in the said event — which is probably more surprising to many over the iPhone reveal — and announced that they will debut the "Super Mario Run" on iPhone.
It was a surprising announcement because every "Super Mario" fan knows that Nintendo has kept the game from hitting the mobile device world. But looks like Nintendo had a change of plans and they decided to do it with the Cupertino-based tech giant.
As promised by Miyamoto in his Sept. 7 presentation, "Super Mario Run" can be initially downloaded for free. But, just like every app, it carries in-app purchases. But Miyamoto promised that, unlike other apps, "Super Mario Run" will set a one-time price or will let players access all the contents of the game once paid. Reports note that the highly anticipated Nintendo classic's entire content will cost $10.
The game will be available in 151 countries, but it skips the biggest mass market in the world — China. As Macworld noted in their report, "Super Mario Run" goes to "Micronesia, Palau and Kyrgyzstan ... but not China."
"Super Mario Run" has three game modes. First is the classic auto-running Mario mode in which players need to navigate through tapping the screening. Second, "Toad Rally" is like the game's battle mode in a timed run in which opposing players will compare the total collected coins when the time runs out. Lastly, Nintendo will introduce a mode in which players can create their own Mushroom Kingdom with the coins they collect at the "Toad Rally."
