'Star Wars Rebels' season 3 release date news: New season debuts Sept. 24
Another chapter in the Star Wars universe will open long before "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" hits theaters in December.
Disney has announced that "Star Wars Rebels" season 3 will debut with a special hour-long premiere episode on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 8: 30 p.m. ET on Disney XD. The 3D CGI animated series from Lucasfilm Animation moves into a primetime weekend slot from its previous Wednesday evening timeslot.
The season 3 announcement from Disney XD was accompanied by a new "Star Wars Rebels" teaser.
According to ComicBook.com, the first two episodes of "Star Wars Rebels" season 3 will introduce Grand Admiral Thrawn and The Bendu. The two new characters were featured last month at Star Wars Celebration Europe, which was held in London.
"Star Wars Rebels" season 3 marks the on-screen debut of Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Chiss Imperial who was introduced in the "Expanded Universe"/"Legends" books of the '90s. He is known for attempting to revive the Empire after the Battle of Endor. In "Star Wars Rebels," Thrawn will be focused on stopping the Rebels.
Meanwhile, it's still anybody's guess if Ashoka Tano has been killed in the "Star Wars Rebels" season 2 finale. But based on a recent interview with series creator Dave Filoni, it seems that there is a chance that the beloved character might truly be dead.
In an interview with Slash Film, Filoni was asked if a children's animated series could possibly kill off a fan-favorite character. "You know I would say absolutely you can," he answered.
He added: "You can kill off characters. You can turn them [to the dark side] if it serves the story. That's something George [Lucas] always warned me about. You know, if you do this, do it for a reason. A reason kids will understand. But don't just do it to do it. Which is sometimes a hard thing not to do, to be tempted by. But, you know, we'll see. It's good to get you to the edge."
Before "Star Wars Rebels" season 3 debuts next month, the show's second season will be made available on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 30.
