'Star Trek: Discovery' release date, news: James Frain tapped to play Sarek, Spock's father; Show delayed again

Looks like CBS Television Studios has just made a huge move by casting an actor to play a certain pointy-eared Vulcan in "Star Trek: Discovery." And this character isn't just any Vulcan. It's Sarek, Spock's father.

The Hollywood Reporter has reported James Frain has been cast to play Sarek. That's the good news. Now, for the bad news. Sources have also revealed that the series is going to be delayed once again. That means "Star Trek" fans will not see it air in May.

"Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created. This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it's best for the show. We've said from the beginning it's more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn't beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows," CBS said in a statement.

Mark Lenard played Sarek in the original "Star Trek" series, and he also portrayed the character in several films. Jonathan Simpson also played a young Sarek in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," and Ben Cross had the chance to portray him in the 2009 "Star Trek" film. Now, it's Frain's turn to play the Vulcan ambassador to the United Federation of Planets.

Aside from Frain, "Star Trek: Discovery" will also star Sonequa Martin-Green as Rainsford, the lieutenant commander of the U.S.S. Discovery and the main character of the show. Doug Jones will play Saru, the science officer of the Discovery, while Anthony Rapp has been cast as Stamets, an astromycology expert.

Furthermore, Michelle Yeoh will portray Georgiou, the Captain of the USS Shenzhou, while Shazad Latif, Chris Obi and Mary Chieffo will be playing Klingons.

The new premiere date for "Star Trek: Discovery" hasn't been announced yet, but the series will premiere on CBS first before it moves to CBS All Access.
