'Star Trek: Discovery' release date, news and updates: showrunners thinking about break with tradition
A lot of fans are excited for the next addition to the "Star Trek" lore, "Star Trek: Discovery." The show will be available on CBS All Access — the streaming service for the network — and the show will reportedly be rated TV MA, meaning that it could include more mature content like nudity and swearing.
In an interview with Recode Media, CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzor talks about science fiction on television today, and how they plan to break into the market with this version of "Star Trek."
He says, "Sci-fi is not something that has traditionally done really well on broadcast... It's not impossible, for the future, if somebody figures it out. And things like 'Lost' and 'Heroes' have had parts of, you know, sci-fi, but historically, a show like 'Star Trek' wouldn't necessarily be a broadcast show, at this point."
It's said that the show will be introduced first via broadcast before it will move on to the streaming service. From that point on, "Star Trek: Discovery" will be able to venture on to more mature content like the possibility of naked aliens and swearing.
Some speculate that the reason for the network's move to bring the show to their streaming service is because CBS' target demographic doesn't seem to be responding very well to the science fiction genre. One example would be the relocation of "Supergirl" to The CW to broadcast along with sister series "The Flash" and "Arrow."
A lot of fans also seem to be angered by the decision to make the show exclusive to CBS All Access. To be able to watch "Discovery," that would mean they have to pay fmore for a streaming service every month. For the rest of the world, however, they will be able to watch the show on Netflix.
"Star Trek: Discovery" is set for release on May 2017.
