'Star Citizen' release date, latest news & update: game has raised more than $138 million dollars
Crowdfunded projects don't usually create a lot of buzz in the gaming community since gamers tend to set their sights on AAA games that have high development budgets. But "Star Citizen" is no ordinary crowdfunded project. As of Dec. 10, the game has already raised more than $138 million dollars, and it even made it into the Guinness World Records in 2014 as the "largest single amount ever raised via crowdsourcing."
Back in 2014, Cloud Imperium Games head Chris Roberts said that all the money made before the launch would be spent on the game's development. If that's the case, then "Star Citizen" is going to become one of the most expensive games ever developed once they are done with it.
Power Up Gaming noted that this means the development cost for the game is going to be bigger than that of "Grand Theft Auto V" (commonly referred to as "GTA 5"). That's amazing! Who would have thought that Cloud Imperium Games could challenge major game studios and publishers like Rockstar Games and Electronic Arts?
"Star Citizen" will soon replace "GTA 5" as the third most expensive game in terms of development cost, and it is only $2 million behind "Destiny" in second place. Right now, "Star Wars: The Old Republic" is in first place with a total development cost of $200 million. However, it should be noted that the total cost of those games is much higher since game publishers still have to market the game.
Right now, "Star Citizen" still does not have a release date and the developers are still busy working on the game.
The game is an ambitious project that aims to combine multiple game genres. Fans of exploration and space trading games such as "Elite: Dangerous" will be glad to know that "Star Citizen" has those genres covered. The game also has first-person shooter elements, and it features a single-player campaign mode as well as a co-operative multiplayer campaign.
