'Sherlock' Special Episode Spoilers, Plot News: Sherlock Holmes Travels Back in Time to Victorian London
It's confirmed: Sherlock Holmes will travel back in time to London during the Victorian era.
"Sherlock" co-creator Steven Moffat explained the time travel is part of a special, which is independent from the show's highly anticipated fourth season.
"The special is its own thing. We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special," Moffat said.
"It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it — as we could hardly conceal — it's Victorian," he clarified, according to the Variety.
Moffat was alluding to the high stakes involved with the show's fourth season at the 2014 Emmy Awards.
"We have a plan ... we practically reduced our cast to tears by telling them about the plan," he told reporters in the press room after accepting the award for writing for a miniseries.
Moffat's announcement clearly explained the photos that BBC One released of "Sherlock" stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman donning Victorian garb.
These images actually set off speculations of whether the show would explore time travel or simply be playing dress-up.
Now, fans are asking: what will Sherlock and Watson find themselves in, while wearing Victorian clothes, during the 19th century or over 100 years ago?
Since the special is set during the time period when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tales were set, it will be interesting to see how this story unfolds.
We'd likely have to wait until December, when this special is tentatively set to air, to find out for sure. But hopefully more details will surface soon.
The special, whose production started in November, is still in the making with no premiere date given yet.
Production is also expected to begin on Season 4 of "Sherlock" later this year, with the new season likely to air sometime in early 2016.
