'Shanghai Dawn' updates: Movie lands 'Napoleon Dynamite' director
A third movie in the "Shanghai Noon" franchise is apparently in the works, and it will be titled "Shanghai Dawn." It has been 13 years since the last movie, "Shanghai Knights," graced the silver screen, and MGM has hired ''Napoleon Dynamite'' and "Nacho Libre" director Jared Hess to direct the movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie's story will come from that same team that wrote the screenplay for the first two films, "Smallville" writers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. The actual screenplay, however, will be written by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum.
As of now, no official news about the plot has been revealed, but fans can expect more period action and comedy to take place — such is the trademark of the entire franchise.
No news has also been made official on whether Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan will be returning to reprise their roles as Roy O'Bannon and Chon Wang, and no plans have been reported on what the production would do should the stars refuse to reprise their roles.
Though not critical successes, the movies in the "Shanghai Noon" series have been fairly successful and have even featured prominent stars before they were even more widely known to the public. "Shanghai Knights" alone had actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Kick-Ass," "The Avengers: Age of Ultron"), Donnie Yen ("Ip Man," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"), and Aidan Glenn ("Game of Thrones," "The Dark Knight Rises"), all starring in prominent roles.
Jackie Chan has always been the main draw for the movies in this series, and at the age of 52-years-old, he doesn't seem to have any plans of slowing down. This year had Chan release another action comedy, "Skiptrace," starring next to "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville.
No official release date has been announced for the movie.
