'Shadowhunters' season 2 cast news, spoilers: Alisha Wainwright cast as werewolf named Maia

Maia is coming to "Shadowhunters" season 2, and she may be causing trouble for newly turned vampire, Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende).

Alisha Wainwright has been cast in the role of Maia, whom Enstarz described as a werewolf with a dark history. She is a character introduced in "City of Ashes," the second book in the massively popular "The Mortal Instruments" series written by Cassandra Clare from which the show is based on.

In the book, Maia became a werewolf after her ex-boyfriend bit her in vengeance. She ran away, ended up in Manhattan, and eventually became part of Luke Garroway's (Isaiah Mustafa) werewolf pack. She struck a friendship with Clary Fray's (Katherine McNamara) best friend, Simon, defying their clans' natural tendency to be at odds with each other. Their friendship would gradually blossom into a full-on romance as the story progressed.

Does this mean that Maureen Brown (Shailene Garnett) could be out of the picture when the second season of "Shadowhunters" comes around? The first season saw Simon getting into a sort of relationship with Maureen in hopes of overcoming his romantic feelings for Clary. Former executive producer Ed Decter also told TV Line back in April that something big was in store for Maureen in season 2.

But now that Decter has been replaced by new co-executive producers, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, who previously worked on "Smallville," fans of the show are wondering if the plot points he has teased before he exited would still see the light of day.

According to Deadline, Decter left the series abruptly before production even began for season 2. He has yet to release an official statement on the matter. Meanwhile, filming has reportedly proceeded as scheduled.

If the new showrunners decide to adapt Decter's visions for the show's sophomore season, Simon could find himself right at the center of two girls vying for his affections. This is in addition to all the other troubles he would have to face as he navigates through his new life as a vampire.

"Shadowhunters" season 2 will premiere on Freeform in a yet to be specified date in early 2017.
