'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' release date news update: Disney CEO talks about plans for a movie in 2020
Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Aside from the fact that it's another "Star Wars" movie, it will take fans to a familiar timeline in the franchise that nobody has ever seen before. Disney CEO Bob Iger recently talked about the film and he said that there are more "Star Wars" films planned after 2020.
According to Deadline, Iger said that he is not expecting "Rogue One" to earn as much profit as "The Force Awakens," but the hype for the movie is still high. A lot of fans have been worried ever since the movie was reported to be undertaking "extensive reshoots." There were even rumors that another director was brought in during post-production.
Some speculated that Iger's comment on not expecting the movie to make much in the box-office was a sign that "Rogue One" will not be the hit that fans are expecting, but he said, "We love what we've seen."
Aside from "Rogue One," there is a steady stream of "Star Wars" movies that are set to come out each year. 2017 will have the sequel to "The Force Awakens," "Star Wars Episode VIII," and the year after that will see the release of the "Young Han Solo" movie starring Alden Ehrenreich. 2019 will have the third and probably final addition of the new trilogy, "Star Wars Episode IX."
There hasn't been any news on what the 2020 "Star Wars" movie will be, but the idea was supposedly pitched by "Episode IX" director Colin Trevorrow. Could the movie be a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi film? Or would it be a movie about Bounty Hunter Boba Fett?
Iger said, "We have movies in development for 'Star Wars' 'til [2020], and we started talking about what we're going to do in 2021 and beyond."
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is set to release on Dec. 16.
