'Power Rangers' reboot release date and news: Website officially launches; new trailer revealed
The New York Comic-Con this past weekend has given fans a lot of new things to be excited about for the upcoming "Power Rangers" reboot. The first official teaser trailer for the movie has been revealed. The movie's official website has also been launched, providing fans with new stills and character bios.
The trailer gives the audience a first look at the super-powered teens from Angel Grove; there's no glimpse yet at their power suits but the trailer ends with the team "morphing" into their costumes.
There's also a first look at Elizabeth Banks as the movie's main villain Rita Repulsa, and it looks like she's had run-ins with previous Rangers before. There is no appearance, however, from Bryan Cranston's Zordon or Bill Hader's Alpha 5.
Fans of the original "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" will notice that the Rangers get to use their powers while they aren't in costume. The original series never had the American actors do any of the real action in the show; all the scenes with the Rangers were edited out from the original Japanese "Super Sentai" series, "KyÅryÅ« Sentai Zyuranger."
The movie's synopsis says the Power Rangers will be going up against an alien force that threatens to destroy the planet, but to do so, they have to deal with their own personal issues.
The Red Ranger, Jason (Dacre Montgomery), is a football god in Angel Grove but the trailer hints that his days of fame are over. He may be stuck in juvenile detention.
The Pink Ranger, Kimberly (Naomi Scott), is described as a rebel who used to be one of the popular kids. Now she's struggling to find her real self.
The Yellow Ranger, Trini (Becky G), is a loner from out of town. She wants to makefriends but is having a hard time since her parents are constantly moving around.
The Black Ranger, Zack (Ludi Lin), is said to be full of bravado and confidence, but beneath his swagger is a vulnerable and insecure boy.
Lastly, the Blue Ranger, Billy (RJ Cyler), is the more socially challenged than the others. However, he is also one of the smarter members of the group.
Saban's "Power Rangers" is set for a release on March 24, 2017.
