Power Rangers Movie Release Date, Plot News: Rangers Face Dark Times

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are back in a 14-minute short film titled 'Power/Rangers.' | YOUTUBE

What ever happened to the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers"?

If you ask director Joseph Kahn, he imagined that our beloved Power Rangers have all matured past their teenage years and grown up to face a darker future.

Teaming up with film producer Adi Shankar, Kahn put the beloved Power Rangers characters in a dystopian world as featured in a 14-minute short film titled "Power/Rangers."

The short film starts with Red Ranger Rocky interrogating Pink Ranger Kimberly in his attempt to find out the location of Green Ranger or Tommy, who is apparently the only other Ranger still alive.

Kahn's short is an incredibly cool and well-crafted take on what it would be like to see Rangers like Tommy and Kimberly as adults in a brutal and unforgiving world.

Kahn and Shankar clarified they received no help from Saban Entertainment, the original production house behind the show, nor from Lionsgate, the company that is currently working on the TV series' reboot for the big screen.

But while this new take isn't officially sanctioned Saban product, you cannot simply brand it as usual fan-film as the presence of Katee Sackhoff and James Van Beek made it extraordinary.

Sackhoff, the "Battlestar Galactica" actress, played Pink Ranger or Kimberly, a role that was made famous by Amy Jo Johnson in the TV series.

Meanwhile, Beek, the "Dawson's Creek" star, played a disgruntled former Red Ranger or Rocky that was made famous by Steve Cardenas on the show.

Known for directing independent movies like "Torque" and "Detention," Kahn told HitFix that the short film isn't intended as a pitch for a "real" Power Rangers feature, but instead a finished project in itself.

"The irony here is that I wouldn't even want to make 'Power Rangers: The Movie' for real. If I had to make a Power Rangers movie, this is it. It's 14 minutes long and it's violent and this is what I have in me," he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Last summer, Lionsgate announced that "Star Trek" executive producer Roberto Orci will produce a reboot of "Power Rangers" while "X-Men: First Class" writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz will pen the script.

The movie is expected to be released in July 2016.
