'Orange is the New Black' season 5 news: Prison drama gets official premiere date; new intense teaser revealed
Netflix recently announced the official premiere date for "Orange is the New Black" season 5, along with a short teaser featuring the ladies of Litchfield.
Season 5 arrives on Friday, June 9, and it will pick up exactly where the previous installment left off. Cast member Danielle Brooks confirmed last month that the new storyline takes place over three days, saying: "It will be very detailed, very intense, and you better get ready. Get your popcorn, your tissues." However, she didn't spill any details about the characters and what's next after last season's major death.
To give viewers a teaser for the upcoming season, the streaming giant released a 15-second trailer on Wednesday. The clip didn't give away many clues, but it reminded fans of the intense moments back in the season 4 finale. Brief shots of the inmates were previewed in the video, including Lorna (Yael Stone), Alex (Laura Prepon), Red (Kate Mulgrew), Piper (Taylor Schilling), Taystee (Danielle Brooks), and more. Everyone appeared to be stressed and worried, as the last scene cut back to Daya (Dascha Polanco) pointing a gun at the camera.
The show ended last season with the inmates coping with the senseless death of fan-favorite Poussey (Samira Wiley). They started a riot to protest the corrupt system in Litchfield, leading to a guard being pushed to the ground. Daya, who's usually calm and collected, grabbed her gun and pointed it at him and another guard. The scene cut to black before fans could see if she decided to pull the trigger or not.
Schilling spoke with E! News after the show's win at the 2017 SAG Awards, and she shared some thoughts about the new season. "I think the stakes are higher in this season than they have been in a while just by virtue of the compressed time and seeing people in compressed circumstance really raises the stakes," the actress said. "It's exciting to watch, I think for all of us," she went on to say.
The fifth season of "Orange is the New Black" will be released in its entirety on Netflix.
