Oklahoma City Thunder trade rumors: Thunder may still be pushing for Gay trade
Looking to fill in the void that was created when Kevin Durant left the team, the Oklahoma City Thunder are again in talks to acquire Rudy Gay.
The small forward of the Sacramento Kings has been part of trade talks throughout the summer, with many teams linking themselves to the two-way star.
Gay is still one of the best small forwards in the league, excelling both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. However, his inability to stay in a single team is apparent and this time the Thunder may be his new destination.
The two teams had initial talks, with guard Cameron Payne as the potential choice as the trading piece for the Thunder, but talks stalled when the point guard suffered an injury.
However, if the Thunder really wants Gay, they can probably add a few more pieces to the puzzle to get their man. The likely problem is that the Thunder may be trading away too many young pieces for a star already in his 30s.
Recently turning 30, Gay is at the peak of his powers and has a small window left to play at an elite level. His averages are still better than usual at 18.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
However, the Thunder might not be willing to let go of young players. They might be better off waiting for another year for the young ones to develop and then trade them when they have a higher price tag.
It should be interesting to see how much the Thunder are willing to let go and how big or little the Kings value Gay given that he has a contract that is set to expire soon.
For Oklahoma, they might be better off waiting a little longer.
