'New Girl' season 6 air date news: 2017 brings in professional growth and success for loftmates

Unlike most other shows going into the obligatory midseason hiatus, FOX's comedy series "New Girl" does not plan on being away for too long. When January comes around, fans can expect Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and the rest of the Lofties back on track with their potentially more mature paths.

Entertainment Weekly's Spoiler Room update recently revealed that the show's back half episodes will feature the Lofties working toward more mature goals as things begin to change following newlyweds Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) move out of the loft and into their new home. Some major career shifts will also find the rest of the gang as they seek to advance themselves professionally for the New Year.

According to executive producer Brett Baer, Jess' dream of becoming principal will be fulfilled, and that Schmidt will also find success in his career at some point during the second half of "New Girl season 2. Winston's (Lamorned Morris) personal advancement may well be focused on a more romantic kind as his girlfriend, Aly (Nasim Pedrad) returns from her training in Quantico. And Nick (Jake Johnson) will see some progress on the book he's been working on, while also trying to "play it cool" when his long-distance girlfriend, Reagan (Megan Fox) decides to stay after the holidays and move back in the loft.

The first episode for 2017 is titled "Raisin's Back." It will see Schmidt embarking on a soul-searching journey after his love for electronic dance music is challenged by his wife Cece and Winston. What will Schmidt discover about himself in this upcoming episode, and will he still love electronic dance music by the end of it?

How will the upcoming changes in their personal lives affect the Loftmates' relationships with each other and with their significant others? Will Reagan's stay at the loft turn into a more permanent arrangement, or is she just there temporarily, to perhaps help Nick sort some things out?

"New Girl" will shift to a new time slot as it returns on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
