Netflix New Movies October 2014: Breaking Ground, Netflix to Release 1st Original Movie
In a move that could change the habits of moviegoers, the Internet-streaming firm Netflix has announced that it will release its first original movie, a sequel to Ang Lee's martial-arts epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."
In making the announcement last Monday, Netflix said it is partnering with independent producer Weinstein Co. to release "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend" to all its subscribers on Aug. 28, 2015.
The film will also premiere at the same time in selected IMAX theaters worldwide but will not hit mainstream cinemas, said Netflix, the world's leading subscription service for watching TV episodes and movies on mobile phones.
The deal between Netflix and the producers of the movie threatens to radically change the traditional way of releasing and watching brand-new movies. The tradition followed for ages is that the latest movies are screened first in cinemas. Viewers have to wait for months before the same movies could be made available on DVD and streaming services.
Netflix's move threatens to cast this tradition aside and radically change the viewing habits of the public.
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, told the New York Times that the deal would prove to Hollywood that moviegoers can watch new movies in new ways. Film producers would also be given the option to sell their films on the Internet even before they are released on the big screen.
Netflix said the "Crouching Tiger" sequel is the first of several new feature movies it has lined up.
Netflix has already released its own original series, including such hits as 'House of Cards" and "Orange Is the New Black." The company releases all episodes of each show all at once, letting consumers binge-watch rather than limit themselves with weekly doses.
This month Netflix also expanded into the European market.
"The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement," said Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of the Weinstein Co., in a statement.
Netflix's new film will star Michelle Yeoh, who will reprise her role from the original film as warrior Yu Shu Lien. Donnie Yen, of the Ip Man franchise, will star as Silent Wolf.
Meanwhile, Netflix will add more than 60 new movies and TV shows to its streaming lineup, according to Cleveland.com.
The new titles include "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"; the Oscar-winning "Kramer vs. Kramer"; the Academy Award-nominated "Django Unchained"; and several full seasons of popular TV shows such as "Sons of Anarchy."
