'Metal Gear Survive' release date and news: Former MGS helmer Hideo Kojima comments on the game
"Metal Gear Survive" would be the first game in the "Metal Gear" franchise not pioneered by celebrity game designer Hideo Kojima. During his stage presentation at the Tokyo Game Show 2016, Kojima talked about how he had nothing to do with what Konami was planning.
According to IGN, Kojima commented on "Metal Gear Survive" while he was presenting for his upcoming game, "Death Stranding." The game will focus on a bunch of survivors fighting their way against zombie-crystal creatures, to which Kojima said, "The Metal Gear games are about political fiction and espionage... Where do zombies fit in with that?"
Even Yoji Shinkawa, former character and mech designer for the "Metal Gear" franchise, also has no part in "Metal Gear Survive." "If I had worked on that game, it would have mechs in it," he quipped. As of now, he is working closely with Kojima in developing his upcoming game.
True enough, "Metal Gear Survive" has been getting a lot of flak from some hardcore fans of Kojima's games. Zombies have become a staple for first person shooters and having a this title with such a premise feels like Konami trying to get an easy buck.
Some fans have even said that the game is some sort of metaphor for Konami. "Metal Gear Survive" focuses on a group of people left behind by their boss to fend for a new path and find a way to survive. Just like the developers, Kojima has left them to continue the "Metal Gear" franchise on their own. Now they must find a way to make the iconic series last without the help of their former director.
"Metal Gear Survive" will come out sometime next year.
Konami and Kojima are facing different challenges themselves as of now. Konami is trying to push the "Metal Gear" franchise forward without Kojima while Kojima is trying to develop a title that would prove the capability of independent studios to create Grade A games.
It's up to the gamers to decide which one of them will come out on top.
