"The Maze Runner: The Death Cure" is scheduled to resume filming in February after production was halted earlier this year following an on-set accident that left star Dylan O'Brien seriously injured.

O'Brien plays the role of Thomas, the protagonist of the young adult film franchise based on James Dashner's best-selling sci-fi pentalogy "The Maze Runner." Last March, the actor figured in an accident in the third film's Vancouver set. He reportedly fell off the roof of a moving vehicle and was hospitalized after sustaining injuries to his face. According to various news outlets, O'Brien suffered a fracture to either his cheekbone or orbital socket.

Production of "The Death Cure" was immediately halted after the accident and was scheduled to resume in May. However, in April, Fox announced that it had indefinitely shut down production for the dystopian sci-fi film to allow O'Brien to fully recover from his injuries.

"The resumption of principal photography on 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure' has been further delayed to allow Dylan O'Brien more time to fully recover from his injuries," the studio said in a press release. "We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and look forward to restarting production as soon as possible," it added.

After this second delay, "The Death Cure" team is now set to continue filming in early 2017. However, there are rumors that the delay in the resumption of production on "Maze Runner 3" wasn't only brought about by O'Brien's accident.

According to FX News Call, disputes over the production costs of the film are also putting work on the project at a standstill. The outlet said that 20th Century Fox is attempting to increase the budget of the film from the original allocated amount. This is reportedly not what director Wes Ball wants. The director is allegedly insisting on a smaller budget in case the film fails to turn in profit.

"The Maze Runner: The Death Cure" is scheduled to hit theaters on Jan. 12, 2018.
