Lego Movie 2, Lego Batman Movie Release Date News: Jason Segel to Write, Co-Direct Spin-Off
Warner Bros is moving to expand its "Lego" movie franchise by signing on comedy actor Jason Segel to co-write and direct another spin-off.
Segel, who helped Disney revive "The Muppets" a couple of years back, agreed to create the newest Lego movie titled "The Billion Brick Race," The Hollywood Reporter said.
He will be working with co-director Drew Pearce – who is best known for writing the script of "Iron Man 3" and the upcoming "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" – while working on a "Ghostbusters" movie for Sony.
Pearce, who is set to write "Sherlock Holmes 3," reportedly presented an original Lego story which excited Warner Bros executives.
The new spin-off has no release date yet and is on its early stages of development, THR reported.
The studio has added "Billion Brick Race" to the list of Lego spin-offs including "The Lego Movie 2," "Lego Ninjago," and "The Lego Batman Movie."
"Ninjago" will be released in 2016, "The Lego Batman Movie" will follow in 2017 while the sequel "The Lego Movie 2" is set to hit theaters in 2018.
Short List clarified that it is still not sure if "The Billion Brick Race" will be animated or a live-action movie.
The film will mark the first time either Segel or Pearce will direct a film. Segel's previous writing credits include "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Sex Tape," the Guardian reported.
Segel recently received positive notices for his role as David Foster Wallace in "The End of the Tour," which premiered at Sundance.
The creative genius team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce the film, along with other Lego Movie producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee.
Last year, "The Lego Movie" made $469 million from a budget of just $60 million.
