iPhone 8 release date, specs, news: Device to have OLED curved display?

Just as Samsung is looking to own the curved display with its future releases, its rival Apple decides to give it a try in the iPhone 8.

According to the latest report to come out of Apple's supply chain, the next-generation iPhone will be offered with a curved display.

A source that spoke to The Korea Herald claims that it will be Samsung itself that will supply the said curved displays for the iPhone 8.

"The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved as Apple ordered all plastic OLED — not glass — from Samsung Display," the insider said.

"Samsung is capable of supplying a little less than 100 million units of curved OLED displays to Apple. The upcoming iPhone may use new sensing technology, which enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device. But, Apple may not adopt this technology," the source went on to say.

The iPhone 8 using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display would mean longer battery life, as the screens are known for preserving juice all while making sure the visuals are colorful and almost true to life.

Forbes expressed concern that the use of OLED will make the iPhone 8 vulnerable to scratches and marks, which might be a turn off to some and would actually be something new to hardcore iPhone users.

There was no information provided as to the pixel resolution of the curved displays to be used on the iPhone 8 although The Verge believes they will be in quad high-definition (QHD), making the device first of its kind to offer such resolution.

Of course, users are advised to take this with a pinch of salt especially with a report from a few days ago suggesting that Apple will not do so much to change the design of the iPhone 8.

As for the release date, the iPhone 8 is expected to arrive in fall 2017, so there might be more changes in the design and specs before it officially sees the light of day.
