'Insurgent' Movie Spoilers: Divergent 2 Offers Surprises, Multiple Betrayals in Darker Sequel

"Unbelievable!"

That was how one reviewer describes "Insurgent," the sequel to "Divergent," which will hit the big screen on March 20, 2015.

Talking about the novel from which the coming movie is based, reviewer Kelly says" Insurgent" is a "darker, more emotional and insightful" follow-up of "Divergent."

Author Veronica Roth, according to Kelly, employs such heavy themes in the sequel as fear, failure, disillusionment, loss and corruption.

"There are many surprises and betrayals," Kelly reveals. "There are people that you thought were trustworthy who are not. There are also many moments where situations look so dire that you cannot foresee a probable solution."

Kelly says many friendships will be tested, and many lives will be lost.

But Roth frames the dismal landscape with the themes of hope, courage, love, determination and patriotism. This provides the fans with a sense of optimism, Kelly says.

The opening scenes in "Insurgent" will see Tris (played by Shailene Woodley in the movie) wracked by grief and guilt after surviving a brutal attack on her former home and family

She begins searching for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris and her partner Four (Theo James) have become fugitives, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite.

The official movie synopsis continues: "Racing against time, they must find out what Tris' family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world."

The two stars of the movie, Woodley and James, recently revealed major spoilers, including "a lot of chemistry" between Four and Tris.

In an interview with Extra, Woodley, said: "A lot of things are different this summer – different director, different costumes, different set designers. So the movie itself looks very different and has a very different feel to it ...it is bigger in scale and action sequences are much more intense."

She pointed out that "Divergent" was about "figuring out the story and describing the world." But in the sequel, "we have a lot more time to dive into each individual character and get to know them," Woodley said.

Both Woodley and James revealed that there will be "a lot of trains" in "Insurgent."

"There's a big sequence which is cool actually," James said. "Me, Shai, and Ansel, we kind of get on board this train and then we get attacked by like 40 people and becomes this huge kind of action sequence, which is really cool."

Another spoiler is that a new character, Edgar (played by Jonny Weston), is going to come between Tris and Four, creating a love triangle.

"Insurgent" is directed by Robert Schwentke ("The Time Traveler's Wife," "R.I.P.D."), taking over from "Divergent" director Neil Burger who had turned down the offer to meg the sequel for "practical reasons" concerning his shooting schedule.

After "Insurgent" will come the third and last instalment of the triology, "Allegiant," which is expected to hit theaters in March 2016.
