'Insurgent' Movie Release Date News: 'Divergent 2' Set to Be Another Blockbuster Success
Buoyed by the success of "Divergent," the Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation is looking forward to another summer blockbuster with its sequel, "Insurgent," which officially concluded its production in Atlanta, Georgia, last Sept. 6.
"Insurgent" is scheduled for release on March 20, 2015 in the United States.
"Divergent" now ranks as the third most successful Lionsgate franchise after The Hunger Games and Twilight. It racked up more than $200 million at the box office back in April.
"Insurgent" is another science fiction action film based on the novel of the same title written by Veronica Roth. The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke.
The movie's plot follows the exploits of Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and Tobias "Four" Eaton (Theo James) who are both on the run after rebelling against the evil forces led by Erudite faction leader Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet).
As Tris searches for allies and answers in the wake of the uprising, she and Four undergo a series of death-defying challenges from Jeanine who would do anything to stop them.
Haunted by her past choices, Tris is determined this time to protect the ones she loves as she seeks to uncover the truth about her past and ultimately the future of her world.
"Divergent" ended with Tris and Four sealing their love for each other. But in "Insurgent," their relationship will be tested not only by the new threats to their lives but also by a new guy named Edgar who will try to wrest Tris away from Four.
James, who plays Four, the brooding leader of the Dauntless society faction in the series, expects "Insurgent" to be as successful as "Divergent."
"You have to honor the material for the first film because you have a fanbase, but when you come to the second one, if you've done well with the first movie, you now have the ability to think outside the box," he said in an interview.
"And I think as long as you have good character progression -- which is essentially Four and Tris, the anchors of the film -- if you have that stuff right, then if you lose some kind of threads of different plotlines, it shouldn't matter," he added.
Ansel Elgort, who plays Tris' brother Caleb in "Insurgent," said the movie will be much darker than "Divergent."
"It is more about the characters, and now Tris is more badass, so she is going to kick ass a little bit more and there will be a lot more stunts," Elgort said.
Following "Insurgent" closely is "Allegiant," the third installment of the Divergent franchise. Insiders said "Allegiant" will be cut into two parts to extend the popularity of the franchise. "Allegiant" is expected to premiere in theaters in March 18, 2016, a year after the screening of "Insurgent."
