'How to Get Away with Murder' season 3 release date, spoilers news: Annalise has new boss; Connor and Oliver to hurdle relationship drama?

It looks like the third installment of "How to Get Away with Murder" won't be an easy one for Annalise. The show's executive producer himself dished on what fans could expect from Annalise and her gang in the upcoming season.

TV Line has reported that "Dexter" actress Luna Vélez has been tapped by the ABC series to play a recurring role in "How to Get Away with Murder" season 3. She would be playing Annalise's (Viola Davis) superior at Middleton University.

The character is initially described as "self-assured, friendly, warm, and diplomatic." Nevertheless, knowing Annalise's caliber, it remains to be seen if the yet-unnamed boss would stay that way. The publication hinted that the character might eventually cause problems for the hotshot professor and turn out season 3's villain.

The upcoming season would also be adopting a "case-of-the-week" format and see less legal drama plotlines while striving to create a balance between courtroom procedural storylines and the back stories of the main characters.

Speaking of main characters, iDigitalTimes said that season 3 might see a major relationship drama unfold between Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora). They might have shared a controversial time in Italy back in season 2, but Connor might discover that Oliver deleted his acceptance letter from Stanford law school, which could spell trouble in paradise for the two.

There's also the issue of Connor's own brand of deception, which involves murder. Whether these would blow up in the lovers' faces is something "How to Get Away with Murder" season 3 would reveal.

Meanwhile, production has already begun for the third season, as revealed by Davis herself. Apparently, Frank (Charlie Weber) would be making a comeback this season, after running away from Annalise when she discovered that he had a hand in the death of her husband and baby years ago. It remains to be seen, though, if she and Frank would cross paths when the show returns on air.

What Pete Nowalk, executive producer of "How to Get Away with Murder," assured is that Annalise's path won't be an easy one.

"Do you want to watch a show where Annalise is happy all the time? I don't think that's in the fabric of her character. I think Annalise deserves happiness, of course," he told Entertainment Weekly. "What that looks like is going to be very different and up to us to make that feel real. That's a great question: What is Annalise's version of happiness? I don't think it's going to look like anyone else's."

"How to Get Away with Murder" season 3 will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
