House of Cards season 5 premiere date, cast news, spoilers: Original showrunner steps down; Mahershala Ali speaks on leaving his role in season 4
"House of Cards" season 5 recently released its premiere date announcement from Netflix, but plot details are being kept under tight wraps possibly because of new writers taking over the show. Meanwhile, Mahershala Ali, who portrays Remy Danton, shared why he exited the series.
The American political drama TV series based on the novel of Michael Dobbs is now in its fifth season, which is slated to premiere in May on Netflix. According to Inquisitr, the original showrunner — Beau Willimon — has stepped down from running the show.
This might be why the launch date of "House of Cards" season 5 is later than those of the previous seasons. Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese will be co-executive producers for this season, and they are keeping plot details a secret until now.
However, there are speculations that "House of Cards" season 5 might feature current political issues, such as the accusations made against Russia for trying to manipulate elections, since the announcement trailer was released on President Trump's inauguration day.
Meanwhile, Ali, whose character was in a relationship with Jackie Sharp (Molly Parker), announced that he will be exiting "House of Cards," leaving the Deputy House Minority Whip's fate in the show uncertain.
Ali shared in an interview with Deadline that the decision to leave the show was because his character has run its course.
"I didn't feel that there was a lot more to really explore — and if they didn't agree with me, I wouldn't be out of that contract. They understood that we had a good run, you know? You move on. I've said this before: every show has a shelf life. 'House of Cards' might work for seven or eight seasons, it might be done after six, I don't know—but my character also has a shelf life. It was just time to close that storyline out while it still meant something to people," the actor said.
"House of Cards" season 5 premieres on May 30 on Netflix.
