Carrie Mathison may be running after a new villain in the upcoming fifth season of "Homeland" which premieres later this year, a network official disclosed.

David Nevins, the president of Showtime, said the critically-acclaimed political thriller series may even find a new threat to focus on when the show returns.

"We're not necessarily going to stay (with addressing) U.S. relations in the Muslim world," Nevins said during the Television Critics Association's semi-annual press tour on Monday, according to Entertainment Weekly.

"Where they're going to go next year is a little bit up in the air," he added, firmly clarifying that the decision has not yet been made.

The network executive added that the new chapter's villain will also be chosen for creative reasons to avoid repetition in the storyline.

"The real franchise of the show is how difficult it is to be America in the world in the 21st century, how difficult the choices are. I think that's a story that will remain relevant for as long as they can come up with new stories," Nevins said.

"It could be Africa, it could be Europe, it could be back in another place in the Middle East. I don't expect that show to fall into a formula. I can see it coming back to the U.S. at some point," he added.

Nevins admitted feeling a bit of fear to be in a position to make a show that reflects "controversial, political truth," referring to the Paris attacks that killed 12 people last week.

But he assured that incidents like this would not prevent "Homeland," which has focused on Muslim extremists and Middle East terrorists since it was launched in 2011, from tackling sensitive international issues in the future.

Earlier, Pakistani and Israeli government officials criticized the show's most recent season for the way "Homeland" portrayed the countries as war-torn "hell-hole" that secretly helps terrorists.
