Almost four months after launching on the Xbox One, HBO Go is finally launching on the PlayStation 4.

Closing a major gap in the console's app selection, the HBO Go app for PS4 will allow users to watch their favorite classic and new shows on the fly and in between games.

Sony's Computer Entertainment of America executive Phil Rosenberg welcomed the launch on Sony's official PlayStation Blog even as he acknowledged the four months' worth of wait by PS4 users.

"We know you've been looking forward to this day. We are excited to announce that the HBO GO app for PS4 will be ready to download later today," Rosenberg said in an official blog post.

"The app functions just like the PS3 version. After you authenticate your PS4 with your current cable/satellite service through HBOGO.com/activate, you'll be able to watch every episode of every season of HBO's best shows, including True Detective, Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones," he added.

With HBO Go available on PS4, any HBO subscriber with an Internet connection will be able to access most if not all of the network's television series, specials and films.

As always, subscribers will only need to log in using their cable credentials, with supported providers including Time Warner Cable, Dish, and Verizon among others.

The timing also couldn't be better as the new season of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" just started. "Game of Thrones" is also just a month away. Fans who haven't shelled out for a supported set-top box can finally watch each series as they were meant to be watched.

The release came a month before the launch of HBO Go as a stand-alone service, which will allow anyone access to the network's extensive catalogue for a monthly subscription fee.
