Google Glass Latest News: Ban to Be Enforced in Movie Theaters, Some Restaurants
Apart from the usual "Please silence your mobile phones," be ready to hear "Please take off your Google glass" inside a theater the next time you watch a movie.
The National Association of Theater Owners and the Motion Picture Association of America have decided to maintain zero tolerance for moviegoers wearing devices with video recording capability, such as the Google Glass and smartwatches. The ban on wearing those recording devices will become an addendum to the long-standing practice of prohibiting the use of traditional recording devices and phones when a movie is being shown to prevent piracy.
Google glass allows users to take pictures and videos with ease. Last January, a man was reportedly thrown out of a movie theater in Ohio for wearing one while watching a movie.
In a joint statement, the two organizations cited their long history of welcoming technological advances, saying they recognize the strong consumer interest in smartphones and wearable "intelligent" devices.
However, they jointly vowed to maintain a zero-tolerance policy on using any recording device while movies are being shown as part of their continued efforts to ensure movies are not recorded in theaters.
The guidelines are not formally binding; theater operators have the option to either ignore or abide by the new policy set forth by the two organizations.
Meanwhile, some restaurants and bars in San Francisco, Seattle and Oakland have also decided to ban the wearing of Google glass for privacy concerns. A growing number of similar establishments are also planning to do the same.
