'Girl Meets World' season 4 air date, spoilers news: Disney frowns on storyline, ditching series to Freeform?
Disney Channel has yet to confirm the renewal of "Girl Meets World" for its fourth season, leading fans to worry about the fate of the sitcom. The rumor that the show has been canceled isn't making things any better for its loyal followers.
According to reports, Disney is having second thoughts about continuing the series, as its storyline is getting more and more adult. The sitcom airs on Disney Channel, a division of Disney that caters to young teens and kids. As much as possible, the network is striving to uphold its reputation by ensuring no show that tackles adult issues is aired there.
With "Girl Meets World" being on its third season and protagonists Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard) and Maya Hart (Sabrina Carpenter) growing up, there's no avoiding issues deemed too mature for the target audience of Disney. This is apparently the reason why it's taking some time for the network to renew the sitcom.
Maya's rebellious side was already tackled in the series, as well as the love triangle involving Maya, Lucas Friar (Peyton Meyer), and Riley, and surely, there will be more "adult" issues along the way, seeing as how the girls are already at the end of their high school days and will soon be on their way to college.
Some fans are hoping that instead of cancelling the series, Disney will consider turning it over to its subsidiary network, Freeform. Movie News Guide noted that with "Girl Meets World's" storyline bound to be more complicated in the coming days, moving it to the cable channel is the best choice.
Freeform is the same network airing "Pretty Little Liars," a series known for its mature theme. If "Girl Meets World" airs on said network, its writers will be able to play around Riley and Maya's stories even more.
In the meantime, stay tuned for more news and updates regarding "Girl Meets World" season 4.
