Gionee M2017 release date, specs news: Smartphone with dual cameras, 7,000 mAh battery to launch on Dec. 26

Consumers can expect a new smartphone from Gionee arriving later this month. The Chinese manufacturer recently revealed a teaser saying that the M2017 will be unveiled on Dec. 26.

The teaser image features Chinese celebrity couple Xu Fan and Feng Xiaogang dressed in formal wear and seemingly walking down the red carpet. The latter is also seen holding the M2017 smartphone. A similar photo was released by Gionee earlier this month.

Prior to the release of the two teasers, the M2017 made an appearance online last November after it was certified by the Chinese regulatory agency, TENAA. The listing revealed some of the specs of the upcoming smartphone.

The Gionee M2017 features a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. Based on the photos released by TENAA, the device has a square form factor with curved edges. It has silver bezels while the back features a black, texturized panel. The Gionee logo can also be seen beneath the dual-camera setup and the flash.

The device is powered by a 1.9 GHz octa-core processor. There is also 6 GB of random access memory and 128 GB of built-in storage.

One of the most anticipated features for the smartphone would be the dual cameras at the rear made up of 12-megapixel and 13-megapixel lenses. There is also an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls.

The M2017 also impresses with its massive 7,000 mAh battery. However, given the higher capacity of the battery, consumers should expect its dimensions to be somewhat larger. It measures 155.2 x 77.6 x 10.65 mm and weighs 230 grams. If prospective customers get past a heavier and bulkier build, they will be able to gain a long-lasting device.

Gionee's newest smartphone is expected to come preinstalled with the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system. An update to Android 7.0 Nougat may come at a later date. For security, there is also a fingerprint sensor on the front of the device.

No word yet on pricing and availability but more information will be revealed during the special unveiling event on Dec. 26.
