'Game of Thrones' season 7 release date and news: Showrunners 'not interested' in doing a prequel series
"Game of Thrones" has been a massive hit for HBO and the series is all set to end come 2018. With such an expansive universe, however, fans are eager to see a prequel series. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, however, said they're finished with the series and won't be part of any spin-off.
In an interview with TV Line, the producers took time to talk about the possible future of the series. They said, "It's a great world that George [R.R. Martin] created. It's a very rich world. I'm sure there will be other series set in Westeros. But for us, this is it."
Very much like the "Lord of the Rings" series, George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" also has an expansive story that took place way before any of the events of "Game of Thrones" started. A possible spin-off of the show can take place when the Targaryens were still in power — or better yet, it could be during the time when the first Targaryens conquered the dragons and ruled over the seven kingdoms.
The reign of the Mad King Aerys Targaryen is also an interesting plot to study as it heavily involves the younger Eddard Stark, Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen. Not to mention it would also show how Jaime Lannister got the title "Kingslayer" and how Petyr Baelish almost died fighting Brandon Stark for the hand of Catelyn Tully.
With the show officially winning 38 Emmys since the beginning of its run, "Game of Thrones" has become the series that has won the most Emmys as of 2016. This week, Martin and the cast received an Emmy Award for "Most Outstanding Drama." A spin-off series would not be a question with regards to how successful the series has become.
"Game of Thrones" season 7 airs on HBO next year.
