Ed Sheeran is set to croon his way to "Game of Thrones".

This tidbit was given by showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss during the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, who added that they have been wanting to invite the singer-songwriter on set for quite some time to surprise Maisie Williams, who is a fan of Sheeran. They were able to successfully pull off the invitation, and this led to Sheeran having a small role in the series.

Sheeran is not the first musical performer who will have a cameo appearance in "Game of Thrones." Will Champion of Coldplay and Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol appeared in previous episodes. Members of Sigur Ros and Of Monsters and Men also appeared in the show.

No details have been revealed about the character Sheeran will be playing in the show. It is also unclear if he will be recognizable when he takes on his role. The members of the band Mastodon once played the undead versions of Wildlings in the series.

Season 7 of "Game of Thrones" is highly anticipated by fans. The winter that has been ominously foretold at the beginning of the show will soon come to pass. George R.R. Martin, the writer of the novels from which the show is based on, has yet to write the novel version of the events that will be shown in the upcoming episodes, so viewers are in the dark about what will happen to their favorite characters. In an interview with Variety, Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, hinted that not all members of the current cast will be carried over to the eighth and final season of the show.

Season 7 of "Game of Thrones" will premiere on July 16, Sunday, at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO. The showrunners previously announced that it will only have seven episodes, while season 8 will only have six.
